Office of Community Services (OCS)
The Natchitoches Office of Community Service (OCS) was created in 1985 to oversee and manage the $1.5 million in federal funds that come to the Police Jury each year. These funds support the following programs: Rural Transportation, Senior Homemaker Assistance, Home Energy Assistance, Emergency Food and Shelter, USDA Commodity and Child Care Food Program, the Retired Senior Volunteer Program and Head Start.
Nearly one-third of the entire population of Natchitoches Parish receives some type of assistance through OCS each year, including a considerable number of families where one or both parents are employed and families and individuals are on fixed incomes.
This high figure is due in large part to 1) inflation, and 2) to the relatively depressed local economy which has resulted in an increase in the number of our residents, both rural and city, who are classified as at or below the federally prescribed poverty level.
The programs operated through OCS are designed to make low incomes stretch as far as possible while meeting the most basic of human needs.
